What is the History of Arleta, Oregon?
Arleta was first settled in the late 1800s by the Hinkle brothers. During the early years of Arleta’s history, the main industry in the city was fruit farming. The Hinkle brothers were successful in growing a wide range of fruit such as peaches, plums, and apricots. To obtain the best fruit, they had specialized horticulturalists that would work with the brothers to produce the most aesthetically pleasing orchard. Sadly, the Hinkle orchards and the majority of the orchards in the area were destroyed in a fire in 1926. The city was struggling for many years after the fire, but a new orchard industry was found in the early 1960s. In 1962, the city was renamed a nearby street after John D. Rockefeller because he owned an orchard in the area.
