Children’s Dental Sealants

The Benefits of Children's Dental Sealants

Children’s dental sealants are a great way to protect your child’s teeth.  The sealants are simply a thin coat of sealant material (resin) that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth, primarily the molars, to prevent cavities.

Children's Dental Sealants Prevent Cavities

The molars which are the back teeth have grooves and pits on their surfaces.  The first set of molars erupts around the age of 6 and the second set erupts around the age of 12. Bacteria and food particles can get trapped back there and it’s often difficult to clean all of that out with a toothbrush. This situation can lead to cavities.

When we apply the dental sealants to the chewing surface of the molars, these grooves and pits are filled in and that creates a smooth surface that is much easier to clean. The sealants also act as a barrier, and this prevents bacteria and food particles from becoming trapped which greatly reduces the risk of cavities.

Dental Sealants are Safe and Painless

This procedure is very safe, and it is completely painless. We can complete the treatment in just one visit to our dental office. We begin by cleaning the area and drying it. A solution is applied to the surface of the teeth to bond the sealant to the teeth. The sealant is then painted onto the teeth and hardened using a special light.  The entire process takes just a few minutes.

Affordable Preventive Oral Care

This procedure is an affordable way to protect your child from tooth decay.  The cost of children’s dental sealants is lower than the cost of treating dental cavities. Plus, you have the peace of mind that you are providing your child with the protection they need in obtaining good oral health.

Protection That Lasts

The effectiveness of dental sealants can last as long as ten years.  While the sealants may need to be reapplied after this time, they will contribute significantly to reducing the risk of tooth decay making this a good investment in your child’s oral care.

Improved Oral Health

Children’s dental sealants will improve your child’s overall oral health as cavities can cause pain, discomfort, and infection which can lead to more serious dental problems if left untreated. When dental sealants are applied, children can maintain healthy teeth and gums, reducing the risk of more serious dental problems later in life.

Because dental sealants are safe, affordable, and the most effective way to protect your child’s teeth, it should be something that you consider doing for your child.  As always, if you have any questions about dental sealants, give us a call and we will answer any of your concerns.
